Kala’s annual Printmaking Festival is here! Celebrate spring and the art of printmaking and more! Join us for a fun day of art activities! From community art workshops and artist demonstrations to artist vendors and print studio tours, stop by throughout the day and see what’s happening at Kala Art Institute. We hope to bring together our local community of artists, youth, and families for a day of sharing and experiencing art in West Berkeley. Free and open to all ages.

1:00 - 2:00 pm: Screen Printing Demo and Print Giveaway with Jos Sances at Kala San Pablo Ave.
1:00-3:00 pm: The HEAR HERE Billboard will be screening video stories from The Island: We Are Neighbors Together, their year-long partnership with food justice organization the Self Help Hunger Program. We Are Neighbors Together highlights the wisdom of long-time Black residents in South Berkeley as they navigate the changing landscape of this historically African American community. The HEAR HERE will also be screening videos from muralist Deidre Wienberg’s collaboration with Youth Spirit Artworks, an organization that serves unhoused or insecurely housed Berkeley youth.
1:00-3:00 pm Community Fabric Collage workshop with Cordy Joan. This workshop is a part of a larger project called Transmissions, a project making quilts for trans people that will travel around the country in 2025-2027. Be a part of this traveling exhibit! Located in upstairs of our new sculpture/fiber space, The Sculpture Lab!
1:30- 3:30 pm Screen Printing of T-shirts/Totes (Bring a T-shirt to Print On!)
Gelli Plate Printing with natural materials and more!
2:00 pm Heinz Print Studio Tour

2:00- 4:00 pm Ceramic Sgraffito Stamps workshop make your own ceramic stamp to be fired and picked up later. Located in downstairs of our new sculpture/fiber space, The Sculpture Lab!
1:30- 3:30 pm: @Kala Gallery & Community Classroom: In the afternoon, drop in for fun hands-on community art workshops to explore and experiment with the wonders of printmaking! Kala teaching artists will be screen printing tote bags. Bring a t-shirt! We have limited free tote bags for printing!
Participate in art-making activities such as screenprint on your own t-shirt, gelli plate & lego printing, making a ceramic stamp with Kala teaching artists and join us for community quilting with Cordy Joan and hear community stories with The HEAR HERE Billboard and grab a free print from Jos Sances. Fun for all ages! Create spring memories through printmaking, mark-making, layering, and more!

1 pm & 2 pm: @Heinz Print Studio Tours: Meet artists and watch demos in etching & letterpress. Sign up for a Heinz Print Studio Tour on Eventbrite and check out our amazing print studio. Meet Kala staff at the entrance of the Kala Gallery and walk to the studio around the corner (5-8 minutes). The tours are led by Kala staff for 30-45 minutes and include artist demonstrations of various printmaking techniques. Learn more about our Artist-In-Residence (AIR) Program and Adult Art Classes in printmaking and fine arts.
Please Note: The studio is located on the third floor and is only accessible by going up three flights of stairs. Unfortunately, there is no elevator for public use to the studio at this time, and Kala cannot accommodate people with physical disabilities who may have difficulties going up or down a flight of stairs.
