Deconstructing Directing
IT’S NOT IMPROV. IT’S NOT A PLAY. IT’S SOMETHING ELSE.
Improv is made up on the spot. We start with a real script—then break it apart, rebuild it, and find something new.
A director. A cast. A single scene. One hour to make it unforgettable.
- Cut. Rework. Blow it up. Try again.
- Brilliant or disastrous? You decide.
- Every night, a different show. No do-overs.
It’s theatre on the operating table—mid-surgery.
You think you know how theatre is made? Think again.
This isn’t a rehearsal. This is the art of directing, unleashed.
Director’s Cut was born from a simple but powerful idea: what if audiences could actually see the work of the director? Inspired by my work with Deconstructing Directing—an open-access project created to support and train directors, especially in community and educational theatre—this show pulls back the curtain on a part of the art form that’s often invisible.
The spark for Director’s Cut came while watching a YouTube video of Ben Folds composing a song live with the National Symphony Orchestra. Seeing the creative process unfold in real time was electric—and I realized we almost never offer audiences the chance to witness that kind of live discovery in theatre.
Directors shape the heart of every production, yet most receive little formal training or support. It’s not because people don’t care about directors—it’s because, too often, their work happens out of sight and out of mind. Director’s Cut invites audiences into that hidden process, celebrating the artistry of directing and spotlighting the need to nurture it more intentionally.
Every night, we take a real script, a cast, and a single scene—and then break it apart, rebuild it, and find something new. It’s theatre on the operating table: messy, thrilling, and alive.
