The Time Machine
Dramatic Theatre - Benjamin McFadden - Ages 12+ - 90 mins
The Time Machine is a gender-bent reimagining of H.G. Wells’ classic science-fiction novel. Set against the backdrop of late 1800’s London, a young author receives an anonymous invitation to a display of scientific achievement beyond which has never been attempted in the modern world. When she travels outside the city to a glorious mansion, she finds herself in a mysterious setting orchestrated by one only referred to as The Time Traveler.
The Time Traveler recounts her story of traveling deep into the future in search for a better world or Utopia. She tells a wild tale of millions of years in the future, where she discovers a beautiful garden of eden populated by a tiny race of beings called the Eloi. When her machine goes missing, she’s forced to dig deeper into this new world. It’s only when she encounters the Eloi named Weena that she discovers the ugly underbelly of this world. Pale, big-eyed and hideous creatures that de-evolved from several millennia of living underground, these monsters are called Morlocks.
The Time Traveler must now choose between finding her machine and returning to her time or helping to save Weena and this new world from the demons that haunt it. This subversive take on The Time Machine uses the foundation set forth by Wells and looks to bring it into the conversations we’re having in 2025 around class, privilege, gender and control. Embracing the simplicity and theatricality of the story; this production is alive with mask work, movement, music and puppetry.
