What are Crankies you ask? They are an old storytelling art form. Start with a long, illustrated scroll that is wound onto two spools. The spools are loaded into a box which has a viewing window. The scroll is then hand-cranked while the story is told, a song is sung, or a tune is played.
A highlight of this year’s festival is the launch of the Burlington County Troll Trek, a new public art exhibit inspired by renowned sculptor Thomas Dambo’s "Big Rusty" troll made mostly from recycled materials. But don’t be alarmed, these trolls are quite friendly. They are helping to spread a message about the importance of recycling, sustainability and the power of imagination. Two of the new trolls will be revealed in Smithville Park at 6 p.m. along with a map showing the locations of the others.
